takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-77961442513800863012010-08-19T00:44:00.000-07:002010-08-19T01:10:17.783-07:00Penemuan Matahari Baru
Penemuan Matahari Baru.

takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-33624625732254803752009-08-02T01:49:00.000-07:002010-08-29T20:03:09.182-07:00Teori Fisika

Sekilas tentang riset Fisika

Akustik - Astronomi - Biofisika - Fisika penghitungan - Elektronik - Teknik - Geofisika - Ilmu material - Fisika matematika - Fisika medis - Kimia Fisika - Dinamika kendaraan - Fisika Pendidikan
takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-22415994116356927192009-08-02T01:39:00.000-07:002010-08-29T20:09:12.874-07:00Sistem Jaringan Listrik Nirkabel

At its closest(56 million km/35 million mi), Mars is, after Venus, the brightest object inthe night sky. Mars is best observed when it is both at opposition (directlyopposite the Sun in the sky) and near perihelion (its closest approach to theSun). Such favourable circumstances repeat every 15 or 17 years.

Through a telescope Mars is seen to have brightorange regions and darker, less red areas, the outlines and tones of whichchange with Martian seasons. (Because of the 25° tilt of its axis and theeccentricity of its orbit, Mars has short, relatively warm southern summers andlong, relatively cold southern winters.) The reddish colour of the planetresults from its heavily oxidized, or rusted, surface. The dark areas arethought to consist of rocks similar to terrestrial basalts, the surfaces ofwhich have been weathered and oxidized. The brighter areas seem to consist ofsimilar but even more weathered and oxidized material and apparently containmore fine, dust-sized particles than do the dark regions. The mineralscapolite, relatively rare on Earth, seems widespread; it may serve as a storefor carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere.

Conspicuous bright caps, composed of frozen water and CO2,mark the planet’s polar regions. Their seasonal cycle has been followed formore than two centuries. Each Martian autumn, bright clouds form over theappropriate pole. Below this so-called polar hood, a thin cap of carbon dioxidefrost is deposited during the autumn and winter. By late winter, the cap mayextend down to latitudes of 45°. By the spring, and the end of the long polarnight, the polar hood dissipates, revealing the winter frost cap; the cap’sboundary then gradually recedes poleward as sunlight evaporates the accumulatedfrost. By midsummer the steady recession of the annual cap stops, and a brightdeposit of frost and ice survives until the following autumn. These remnantpolar caps consist mostly of frozen water. It studied the planet for almost a year, giving scientiststheir first comprehensive global view of Mars and the first detailed images ofits satellites, Phobos and Deimos. The Viking mission also included two orbiters thatstudied the planet for almost two full Martian years (from 1976 to 1980). Multi-spectral cameras identified several different rock types andvariable degrees of weathering. An alpha-proton spectrometer aboard Sojournerobtained chemical analyses of selected boulders, as a result of which andesiticlavas were recorded for the first time. Sedimentary rocks containing pebbleswere also found. Some drifted material was finer than talcum powder, andseveral boulders had become coated by this strongly oxidized, windblown dustthat appears to be derived from the breakdown of basaltic bedrock. A map released by NASA in1999 revealed that the northern hemisphere is about 5 km (3 mi) lower inaltitude than the south, indicating that the northern regions may have held anyoceans that existed on Mars in the past. Further support was given to the oceantheory by the profile of the Martian crust produced by the MGS, which revealed200-km (125-mi) wide subterranean channels that would once have been surfacefeatures. The three-dimensional mapping also showed that the distance betweenthe highest and lowest points on Mars is one-and-a-half times as great as thatbetween Mount Everest and the deepest ocean trench on Earth, and that thethickness of the crust is about 80 km (50 mi) beneath the southern highlandsand Tharsis ridge, compared to about 35 km (22 mi) beneath the northernlowlands and Arabia Terra. The rectilinear pattern of its side canyons and detailsof its canyon walls indicate that it developed largely in response to tectonicforces associated with the Tharsis ridge.

<v:shape id="Picture_x0020_9" spid="_x0000_i1038" type="#_x0000_t75" style="width: 200.25pt; height: 357pt; visibility: visible;"> <v:imagedata src="Astronomyandspacescience_files/image009.png" title="000a4fc4"></v:imagedata></v:shape>

Searching for Water on Mars

Scientists believe that these channels in a crater wall on Marswere formed by water. The sharpness of the features and the lack of smallimpact craters covering them imply that the channels formed relatively recentlyin the history of the planet. Liquid water, therefore, could exist below thesurface of Mars.

NASA/Science Photo Library/Photo Researchers, Inc.

On the other hand, no features resulting fromlarge-scale compression have been found. Specifically, folded mountain belts,so common on Earth, are lacking, apparently indicating an absence of platetectonics. However, some scientists have suggested that during the earlyhistory of the planet some lateral crustal movements may have taken place. Thissuggests, in turn, that Mars may have developed a thicker lithosphere and mayhave had a thermal history rather different to that of the Earth. In 1999magnetic observations made by Mars Global Surveyor unexpectedly strengthenedthe case for plate tectonics in Mars's early history. They showed long stripsof rock with alternating magnetic polarities, similar to the pattern found onEarth's sea floors on either side of mid-ocean ridges where new crust is slowlyforming and spreading apart. This seems to indicate that at some point in itspast Mars's interior was hot enough both to produce a global magnetic field(which regularly switched direction, as the Earth's does) and to drive platetectonics.

Evidence of subsurface water ice prevails, especially inthe form of petal-shaped ejecta blankets around some craters, vast areas ofcollapsed chaotic terrain, and so-called patterned ground at high northernlatitudes. Among the more spectacular geological discoveries have been the hugevolcanoes of Tharsis, the equatorial canyon system, and numerous channels thatsuperficially resemble the valleys of dried-up rivers. Two major types ofchannels are known. Large outflow channels may have been formed by the suddencatastrophic release of vast amounts of liquid water from areas of collapsedchaotic terrain. Most of these channels drain from the higher southernhemisphere to the generally lower northern hemisphere. The cause of thelocalized melting of the ground ice in the source areas remains uncertain, butthese features probably date from the first third of the planet’s4.6-billion-year history. In addition to the large outflow channels, there arenumerous small channel-like features, which appear to pre-date the outflowchannels; erosion by liquid water is likely to be the cause of these, too, though the evidence is less compelling. Because liquid water cannot existpermanently on the surface of Mars today, the channels have been singled out asproof that the planet had higher pressures and warmer temperatures in the past.In the northern plains, there is considerable evidence for former strand linesand other shoreline landforms, which implies that shallow “palaeolakes” oncecovered a large part of this area. High-resolution images of the surface obtainedfrom Mars Global Surveyor have shown up features that suggest the possibilitythat water may have flowed over the Martian surface rather more recently, geologically speaking. Further than this, it was suggested in 2003 thatgeothermal activity driven by volcanic heat below ground may be able to forceunderground ice deposits to melt and briefly flow across the surface leavingtemporary “dark stains”, although evidence is inconclusive.

Yet the surface of Mars today is essentially awindblown desert. Vast expanses of sand dunes encircle the polar regions, andat much lower latitudes other wind-formed erosional features abound, allattesting to the efficacy of both depositional and erosional wind processes inthe current Mars environment.

Little is known about the interior of Mars. Theplanet’s relatively low mean density indicates that it cannot have an extensivemetallic core. Furthermore, any core that may be present is probably not fluid, because Mars does not have a measurable magnetic field. Judging from itsability to support such massive topological features as the Tharsis ridge, thecrust of Mars may be as thick as 200 km (125 mi)—five or six times as thick asthe Earth’s crust. A seismometer on board the Viking 2 lander failed to detectany definite “Marsquakes”.

VI

SEARCH FOR LIFE

The idea that life could, or even does, existon Mars has a long history. In 1877 the Italian astronomer GiovanniSchiaparelli claimed to have seen a planet-wide system of channels (Italian canali). The American astronomer Percival Lowell then popularized these faint lines ascanals and held them out as proof of a vast attempt by intelligent beings toirrigate an arid planet. Subsequent spacecraft observations have shown thatthere are no canals on Mars, and various other alleged proofs of life on theplanet have turned out to be equally illusory. The dark areas once thought tobe oases are not green, as contrast effects had made them seem to terrestrialobservers, and their spectra contain no evidence of organic materials. Theseasonal changes in the appearance of these areas are not due to any vegetativecycle, but to seasonal Martian winds blowing sterile sand and dust. Water isonly known to occur as ice on and below the surface and as trace amounts ofvapour or ice crystals in the Martian atmosphere. The strongest evidenceagainst the presence of life, however, is the thinness of the atmosphere andthe fact that the surface of the planet is exposed not only to lethal doses ofsolar ultraviolet radiation but also to the chemical effects of highlyoxidizing substances (such as hydrogen peroxide) produced by photochemistry.

Perhaps the most fundamental and far-reachingresult obtained by the Viking landers is that the Martian soil contains noorganic material (there is no reason to assume that the two landing sites arenot representative of the planet as a whole). Although small amounts of organicmolecules are continually being supplied to the surface of Mars by carbonaceousmeteoroids, this material is apparently destroyed before it has a chance toaccumulate. The results of the soil analysis for organic molecules carried outby the Viking landers provide no evidence for the existence of life.

A more difficult question is whether life has everexisted on Mars, given the strong evidence of climatic change and theindications of a previously warmer, thicker atmosphere. Suggestions thatstructures found in a meteorite discovered in Antarctica, which may have beenblasted off the Martian surface, were fossil traces of bacteria-like organismshave since been discounted. However, answering the question of life on Marswill probably involve collecting carefully selected subsurface samples andreturning them to Earth for detailed analysis.

takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-25642835341525370482009-07-06T01:57:00.000-07:002009-07-16T20:45:37.767-07:00Terbentuknya Pasir

(wasis wibowo)

>> resensibukubaru.com

takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-13480511355494862802009-06-29T02:09:00.000-07:002009-07-29T02:27:53.958-07:00Alan TuringThis obituary for Alan Turing appeared in The Times on June 16, 1954. The text refers to the war interrupting Turing’s mathematical career for six critical years. At the time that this article was written, Turing’s immense contribution to the cracking of the German Enigma code was a state secret of the highest order, and was to remain so for several more decades. There is also no mention in the text of Turing having committed suicide, a taboo subject in 1954.

ALAN TURING
Dr. Alan Mathison Turing, O.B.E., F.R.S., whose death at the age of 41 has already been reported, was born on June 23, 1912, the son of Julius Mathison Turing.
He was educated at Sherborne School and at King’s College, Cambridge, of which he was elected a Fellow in 1935. He was appointed O.B.E. in 1941 for wartime services in the Foreign Office and was elected F.R.S. in 1951. Until 1939 he was a pure mathematician and logician, but after the war most of his work was connected with the design and use of automatic computing machines, first at the National Physical Laboratory and then since 1948 at Manchester University, where he was a Reader at the time of his death.
The discovery which will give Turing a permanent place in mathematical logic was made not long after he had graduated. This was his proof that (contrary to the then prevailing view of Hilbert and his school at Göttingen) there are classes of mathematical problems which cannot be solved by any fixed and definite process. The crucial step in his proof was to clarify the notion of a “definite process,” which he interpreted as “something that could be done by an automatic machine.” Although other proofs of insolubility were published at about the same time by other authors, the “Turing machine” has remained the most vivid, and in many ways the most convincing, interpretation of these essentially equivalent theories. The description that he then gave of a “universal” computing machine was entirely theoretical in purpose, but Turing’s strong interest in all kinds of practical experiment made him even then interested in the possibility of actually constructing a machine on these lines.
It was natural at the end of the war for him to accept an invitation to work at the National Physical Laboratory on the development of the ACE, the first large computer to be begun in this country. He threw himself into the work with enthusiasm, thoroughly enjoying the rapid alternation of abstract questions of design with problems arising out of the use of the machine. It was at this time that he became involved in discussions on the contrasts and similarities between machines and brains. Turing’s view, expressed with great force and wit, was that it was for those who saw an unbridgeable gap between the two to say just where the difference lay.
The war interrupted Turing’s mathematical career for the six critical years between the age of 27 and 33. A mathematical theory of the chemical basis of organic growth which he had lately started to develop has been tragically interrupted, and must remain a fragment. Important though his contributions to logic have been few who have known him personally can doubt that, with his deep insight into the principles of mathematics and of natural science, and his brilliant originality, he would, but for these accidents, have made much greater discoveries.
Source: The Times [http://www.the-times.co.uk/]

takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-15157571595841489912009-06-23T01:18:00.000-07:002009-07-16T20:58:00.227-07:00Waktu
Matahari adalah penunjuk waktu pertama bagi manusia. At an early age he began to assist in the business of an elder brother who was a land surveyor and architect. This circumstance had an important effect on the course of his life. In the first place, his business engagements took him to various parts of England and Wales; and the observations he made in the course of his journeys about the country persuaded him of the evils of the landlord system and engendered in him those opinions in favour of the State ownership of land which were expressed many years later in his book on “Land Nationalization: Its Necessity and Aims,” published in 1882, and reiterated in his “Social Environment and moral Progress,” published only this autumn. In the second place, this elder brother was a man of advanced liberal and philosophical views; and through constant association with him Wallace soon lost the capacity of being affected in his judgments either by “clerical influence or religious prejudice.”

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >He thus became a “confirmed philosophical sceptic,” a thorough materialist, in whose mind there was no place for any conception of spiritual existence or of any other agencies in the universe than matter and force. But his curiosity being aroused by some inexplicable, though slight, phenomena that occurred in a friend’s house, he began to make investigations, and thus came upon facts which he conceived to be “removed from anything that modern science taught or philosophy speculated upon.” In this way he gradually arrived at a belief, expressed in “Miracles and Modern Spiritualism” (1881), in the existence of præterhuman intelligences of various grades able to act on matter and to influence the minds of men, and was led to question the validity of the a priori arguments against the occurrence of miracles. Another instance of the heterodox and independent nature of his views is afforded by his “Vaccination a Delusion” (1898); and in “The Wonderful Century” (1898, republished in an enlarged form in 1903) the achievements of the 19th century that are singled out as successes or the reverse are not in all cases those which would be selected by the majority of people.

<span style=";font-family:";" >TRAVELS IN THE TROPICS<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >About 1844, while he was a master at the Collegiate School at Leicester, he became acquainted with the naturalist H. W. Bates, whose father was a manufacturer in that town. Some years before he had already shown a marked taste for natural history and had begun to form a botanical collection; and the result of the acquaintance was that the two soon determined to make a natural history expedition to South America. The plan was not only to get specimens for their private collections, but also to obtain duplicates which could be sold and thus help to defray the expenses of their journey; in addition, Wallace at least had in his mind the definite intention of collecting “facts towards solving the problem of the origin of species.”

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Early in 1848 the explorers met in London; and after gaining some idea of the specimens of South American animals and plants then existing in this country, they embarked at Liverpool on April 20 in a small trading vessel, which reached the mouth of the Amazon a month later. For the first year or so they worked together; but subsequently they separated, Bates travelling some 1,400 miles up the Amazon, while Wallace explored the Rio Negro. After an absence of four years the latter returned to England, landing at Deal in 1852; but on the voyage he suffered a severe misfortune, for, the ship taking fire, his notes and collections were lost, with the exception of some he had sent on beforehand, and he himself was ten days in an open boat. In 1853 he published an account of his expedition, “Travels on the Amazon and Rio Negro,” and also a small book on “Palm Trees of the Amazon.”

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >In the following year, having disposed of such specimens as had been saved, he started off for the Malay Archipelago. The main object of this journey also was to obtain specimens both for his own collections and for those of museums and amateurs. He was away from England eight years, and during that time travelled 14,000 miles within the Archipelago, visiting, among other countries, Sumatra, Java, Borneo, Celebes, the Moluccas, Timor, and New Guinea. The specimens he brought back numbered over 125,000, including 8,000 birds; 13,000 lepidoptera, 83,000 coleoptera, and 13,000 other insects. The examination and classification of this huge collection, some parts of which are now in the British Museum and some in the Hope collection at Oxford, was naturally a laborious undertaking; and thus it was that the two volumes on “The Malay Archipelago,” containing an account of his travels, were not published till 1869.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Among other results of his investigations it the East he showed that an imaginary line passing between Borneo and Celebes, through the Strait of Macassar, and between Bali and Lombok, divides the Archipelago into two regions which have completely different zoological characteristics; in the islands lying to the west of “Wallace’s Line” the flora and fauna are essentially Oriental, while in those lying to the east of it they are distinctively Australian, a prominent feature of this eastern region being a great number of marsupials but an almost complete absence of the mammalia that occur in other parts of the world. Wallace continued his studies in zoo-geography in his classical book, “The Geographical Distribution of Animals” (1876) and in “Island Life” (1880). The two journeys to the Amazon and Malaysia complete the tale of his tropical wanderings; but in later years he made various trips to the Continent, in 1887-88 went to the United States and Canada, delivering a course of Lowell lectures at Boston.

<span style=";font-family:";" >WALLACE AND DARWIN<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Wallace was first introduced to Darwin, to whom “The Malay Archipelago” is dedicated, in 1854, in the Insect Room of the British Museum; but nothing of any great moment seems to have been said by either on that occasion. A few years later, however, Wallace was destined to cause considerable perturbation in the mind of the man who was to write the “Origin of Species.” So far back as 1842 Darwin had written out an outline of the law of natural selection which in an enlarged form had been read by Sir Charles Lyell and Sir Joseph Hooker in 1844, though otherwise he does not appear to have spoken about it to anybody. At any rate, when Wallace, who had published in 1855 in the Annals of Natural History a paper on “The Law which has Regulated the Introduction of New Species,” wrote to Darwin on the subject the latter gave no hint of having arrived at any conclusion regarding the mode in which such a law operates; and in 1857 he even to wrote Wallace, “My work will not fix or settle anything.” Yet in the beginning of 1856, at Lyell’s instance, he had begun to write out his views on the “tendency in organic beings descended from the same stock to diverge in character as they become modified,” and to expound his belief that the “modified offspring of all dominant and increasing forms tend to become adapted to many and highly diversified places in the economy of nature.” He was therefore justifiably astonished, on June 18, 1858 to receive from Wallace, then in the Moluccas, an essay “On the Tendency of Varieties to depart indefinitely from the Original Type,” in which his own theory was clearly expressed. The letter which Darwin sent to Lyell on the same day is worth quoting again:—

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >He [Wallace] has sent me the enclosed and asked me to forward it to you. It seems to me well worth reading. Your words have come true with a vengeance—that I should be forestalled. You said this when I explained to you very briefly my view of natural selection depending on the struggle for existence. I never saw a more striking coincidence; if Wallace had my MS. sketch written out in 1842 he could not have made a better short abstract. Even now his terms stand as heads of my chapters.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >The question of publishing this theory at once became urgent and also delicate; for while Darwin was excusably anxious to have credit of originating the hypothesis, he was also anxious that Wallace should not be deprived of any honour that was due to him. Finally it was arranged that Lyell and Hooker should “communicate” to the Linnean Society a joint paper by Messrs. C. Darwin and A. Wallace, consisting of Wallace’s essay and extracts from Darwin’s sketch of 1844, together with part of a letter he had written to the American botanist, Asa Gray, in September, 1857. This was done on July 1, 1858. Fifty years later Wallace was present as the central figure in the celebration of the jubilee of this event, which was held by the Linnean Society in London in 1908.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >In Wallace’s contribution it was pointed out that in the “struggle for existence” those animals which prolong their existence can be only the most perfect in health and vigour, while the weakest and least perfectly organized must always succumb; and various examples of the operation of the law of natural selection were given—e.g., that the giraffe acquired its long neck, not as Lamarck supposed by desiring to reach the foliage of more lofty shrubs and stretching its neck for the purpose, but because any varieties that occurred with longer necks than usual secured a fresh range of pasture over the same ground as their shorter-necked companions, and thus on the first scarcity of food were enabled to outlive them. The conception of this survival of the fittest came to Wallace in February, 1858, while he was living at Ternate, in the Moluccas, the idea “suddenly flashing” upon him as he lay suffering from a sharp attack of intermittent fever; and in three days he had written out an outline of the theory and posted it to Darwin. It is an interesting circumstance that the same book—Malthus’s “Essay on Population”—which Darwin mentions as having given him a theory by which to work also supplied the stimulus that resulted in the idea of the survival of the fittest arising in Wallace’s mind. One effect of this incident was that Darwin and Wallace became firm friends and frequent correspondents, although not actually seeing much of each other; and at Darwin’s funeral in Westminster abbey in 1882 Wallace was one of the pall-bearers.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >His writings did much to promote the progress and understanding of Darwinian doctrine. The two essays of 1855 and 1858, mentioned above, were reprinted in 1870, together with several others on allied topics, in “Contributions to the Theory of Natural Selection,” a volume which appealed to a wide circle of readers; and still later (1889) Wallace published “Darwinism,” which also incorporates much of the teaching of Weismann. But he did not see eye to eye with Darwin in every respect. He held, for instance, that other forces besides natural selection have moulded the development of the human race, and adopted views of a decidedly teleological character. In the “World of Life,” published in 1910—a wonderful book to be written by a man in his 88th year—he gave clear expression to these views, arguing that the complexity of the structure of living things necessarily implies—(1) a creative power; (2) a directive mind; and (3) an ultimate purpose, which he conceived to be the development of man—“the one crowning product of the whole cosmic process of development.” Another example of the anthropocentric tendency of his though may be found in the support he lent to the hypothesis that this planet is the centre of the universe.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Wallace was awarded a Royal medal by the Royal Society in 1868 in recognition of his many “contributions to theoretical and practical zoology,” and in 1893 he was very appropriately chosen as the first recipient of the Darwin medal, but it was not till 1890 that he was elected a Fellow of the Society. Other honours he received were the gold medal of the Geographical Society of Paris in 1870, the honorary degrees of LL.D. from Dublin in 1882 and D.C.L. from Oxford in 1889, and membership of the Order of Merit in 1908. He was president of the London Entomological Society in 1870-71, and of the biological section of the British Association as its meeting in Glasgow in 1876. In 1881 he was granted a Civil List pension of £200 a year. He published an autobiography, “My Life,” in 1905, reissuing it in a condensed form in 1908. His most recent publications were “Social Environment and Moral Progress” and “The Revolt of Democracy,” both of which appeared this year, the latter only a week or two ago.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >In 1866 Wallace married Annie, eldest daughter of the botanist William Mitten, of Hurstpierpoint, Sussex, who survives him, with a son and a daughter. In 1871 he built a house in an old chalk-pit at Grays, in Essex, where he lived for four years, moving subsequently first to Dorking and then to Croydon. In 1880 he built a cottage at Godalming, and grew nearly a thousand species of plants in his garden there. In 1889 he went to live in Dorset, at Broadstone, near Wimborne, where he has lived ever since.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;color:black;" >Source: The Times [http://www.the-times.co.uk/]

takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-51881847614873371452009-04-29T02:28:00.000-07:002009-07-29T02:33:59.628-07:00Albert Einstein<span style=";font-family:";" >FATHER OF NUCLEAR PHYSICS<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >
<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Professor Albert Einstein, the greatest scientist of modern times, died in hospital at Princeton, New Jersey, on April 18 at the age of 76. He had lived a secluded life for some years, though he had been a member of the staff of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton University.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Albert Einstein was born at Ulm, in Württemberg, on March 14, 1879. A year later his family moved to Munich, where they remained until he was 15. His parentage was Jewish, but few Jewish usages were observed in his home. He was slow in learning to talk, and at the Catholic elementary school which he first attended was known as Biedermeier (“Honest John”) from his ponderously accurate way of speaking. Both here and at the Luitpold Gymnasium, where the educational system was rigid, he saw little difference between school and barrack. His father, Hermann, had a small electro-chemical factory, but he had a greater genius for living than he had for success. Failing in Munich he moved to Milan and later to Pavia. The son, left unhappily at the gymnasium, was well on the way to manoeuvring his departure from it when he was unexpectedly asked to leave as being “disruptive” of his class. Italy gave him as great an interest in art and music as he already had in Schiller, and the affairs of his father enforced him to seek a career. He had speculated at the age of five on the movement of a compass needle, and he knew that his mathematics, if not his other subjects, were well beyond the usual examination requirements. Combining interest and ability, he arrived at theoretical physics as the field that would most attract him, but, partly because of his father’s work, and partly from his own lack of formal attainment, he thought that technological training would be his best approach. He therefore proposed to study at the Swiss Federal Polytechnic School in Zürich, but was at first rejected. He had to qualify for the diploma in modern languages and biology at a cantonal school at Aarau. There he lost his dislike of schooling, and from the age of 17 until the age of 21 he conscientiously followed the course prescribed at Zürich for a teacher of physics and mathematics. In 1901 he became a Swiss citizen—a reflection of his dislike of authority.

<span style=";font-family:";" >ANNUS MIRABILIS, 1905<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Partly on account of his ancestry, he had difficulty in finding a teaching post, but by the influence of a fellow student he was appointed as a technical assistant in the Swiss Patent Office at Berne in 1902. This was the “cobbler’s job,” which he maintained later was the way that scientists should earn their living. In the next year he married Mileva Maritsch, a fellow student at the Polytechnic. Two sons were born in quick succession, but there were differences of temperament and interest, and the marriage was dissolved after some years.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Einstein’s first contribution to theoretical physics was made in the same year that he obtained his Patent Office job. Three years later was his annus mirablilis, 1905. Then he burst without warning into an extraordinary range of discovery and new ideas of which the “Special Theory of Relativity” was one part, not at the time the most comprehensible by his colleagues. In his earliest work he had simplified Boltzmann’s theory of the random motions of the molecules of a gas, and in 1905 he applied this method to the “Brownian movement”—the impetuous, irregular motion of microscopic particles, suspended in a fluid, that is produced by molecular bombardment. Einstein showed how the number of molecules per unit of volume could be inferred from measurements made of the distances travelled by the visible particles which they hit. Such measurements, made later by Perrin, verified Einstein’s theory so well that the Brownian movement has ever since been regarded as one of the most direct—and impressive—pieces of evidence for the reality of molecules.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >In the same year Einstein advanced a revolutionary theory of the photo-electric effect, which has exercised a decisive influence on the modern quantum theory of light. The essence of this effect is that the speed with which electrons are liberated from a metal surface illuminated by ultraviolet light depends only on the colour of the light and not on its brightness. Einstein suggested that the light (from which the escaping electrons must derive their energy) is not continuously distributed in space, but is like a gas with a discrete molecular structure—the “molecules” being photons or units of radiant energy of amounts proportional to the frequency of the light. This assumption gave a concrete physical mechanism for the quantum theory of white light advanced by Planck in 1900, and it provided satisfactory estimates of the speed of photo-electrons. But the importance of Einstein’s theory of photons far transcended the occasion of its suggestion. Its real significance is that it accustomed physicists to accept the dual character of light, which sometimes behaves like a continuous train of waves, and sometimes a hail of bullets, and that in 1924 it suggested to de Broglie that matter itself had a similar “dual personality” and could behave either as a wave or a corpuscle. These conceptions have dominated all subsequent speculations about the ultimate elements of matter and light.

<span style=";font-family:";" >SPECIAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >Although Einstein’s researches in the quantum theory were of vital significance and, in one direction, seemed to show a clearer grasp of its implications than was possessed by its originator, it is with the theories of relativity that his name will always be associated. The “Special Theory of Relativity” was published in the same extraordinary year. It expressed in a simple and systematic form the effects produced on the basic instruments of physics—the “rigid” scale and the perfect clock—by relative motion, and thus codified the earlier mathematical investigations of Voigt, the physical speculations of Larmor and the pioneer work of Lorentz. For the first time the optics of moving media received a satisfactory formulation, and Newtonian dynamics itself was generalized so as to express the effect of motion on apparent mass. In particular, Einstein’s deduction that mass and energy are proportional became the basic law of atomic transformation. Apart from its spectacular demonstration in atomic energy, it is supported also by a host of experiments in nuclear physics, in which it is used daily as a tool with which nuclear physicists work. Equally, the design of large engineering machines, such as “synchrotrons,” in which nuclear particles are accelerated to high energies, depends directly on its use.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >In this group of varied and important publications he showed at once qualities of imagination and insight which were even more vital to his work than mathematical ability, which indeed was a necessary qualification but was not (by the highest standards) exceptional. It was also well for his immediate career that he had more than one contribution to offer.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >As soon as the remarkable researches published by Einstein in 1905 became known many attempts were made to secure for him a professorial post. As a result of these efforts he became a Privatdozent at Berne in 1908 and Professor extraordinarius at Zürich in 1909. In 1911 he became Professor of Theoretical Physics at Prague, but returned to Zürich to the corresponding post in 1912. During 1913 Planck and Nernst persuaded Einstein to go to Berlin as director of the projected research institute for physics, as a member of the Royal Prussian Academy of Science and as a professor in the University of Berlin—with no duties or obligations. He occupied this post until 1933.

<span style=";font-family:";" >GENERAL THEORY OF RELATIVITY<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >The “General Theory of Relativity,” published in 1916, was the fruit of many years of speculation by Einstein on the questions: “Can we distinguish the effects of gravitation and of acceleration?” and “Are light rays bent by gravity?” To answer these questions he was led to build a great and complex theory, which needs for its systematic expression a new mathematical discipline invented by Ricci and Levi-Civita. The divergences between the predictions of the planetary theory based on Einstein’s theory and those based on the classical theory of Newton are all extremely small, but in one case (the slow changes in the orbit of Mercury) Einstein’s theory provides an explanation which had never been found on Newtonian principles. Moreover, it successfully predicted the deflection of light from distant stars as it grazed the sun’s disc—an effect subsequently verified by British astronomical expeditions in 1919—and also the reddening of light from very massive stars—which was much later confirmed by observations on the dark companion of Sirius. The success with which “general relativity” gave quantitative predictions of the new phenomena has created a presumption in its favour which has substantially survived.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >The application of general relativity to cosmology was implicit in Einstein’s original theory, but became explicit through a modification which he introduced into it in 1917. His contribution in this field was an attempt to provide an answer to an old and “insoluble” problem: “How can the universe of stars be uniform in density, fill all space and yet be of finite total mass?” The subsequent relation of observational evidence of “the expanding universe” to the possible forms of theory that might be developed was done mainly by others, including Lemaître, de Sitter, and Eddington, to whom Einstein served as a stimulus.

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >During the 1914-18 War two other notable events occurred in his life—he refused to sign the “Manifesto of Ninety-two German Intellectuals” which identified German culture and German militarism, and he contracted a second marriage, with his cousin Elsa. In 1921 he appeared publicly as a supporter of Zionism and he actively collaborated with Weizmann in the establishment of the University of Jerusalem. During the post-war years he travelled and lectured in Holland, Czechoslovakia, Austria, the United States (where he not only lectured on relativity but took part in Weizmann’s campaign for the Jewish National Fund), and England (where he lectured at King’s College, London, and calmed the fears of the Archbishop of Canterbury that relativity was a threat to theology). In 1922 he lectured in Paris, Shanghai, and Kobe, returning home via Palestine and Spain.

<span style=";font-family:";" >THE NOBEL PRIZE<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >In the same year he was awarded a Nobel prize, strangely enough, for his work in quantum theory, as the committee were not sure whether his theory of relativity was technically a “discovery”! He was awarded a Copley Medal by the Royal Society in 1925. He visited South America in 1925 and lectured at Pasadena (California) during the winters of 1930-31, 1931-31, and 1932-33. In the summer of 1932 he lectured at Oxford, and was made an honorary Doctor of Science. The great purge of Jewish scientists began under Hitler in 1933 and Einstein decided not to return to Germany, where scientific freedom had ceased to exist. He lived for some months at La Cocque in Belgium and resigned from the Prussian Academy. In the winter of 1933, at the invitation of Flexner, he emigrated to America and became a Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, a post which he held until 1945. His second wife, Elsa, had died in 1936.

<span style=";font-family:";" >INDETERMINACY OPPOSED<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >

<span style=";font-family:";font-size:100%;" >In his later years he was venerated—and loved—but became somewhat isolated in his work from the main stream of modern physics. Remembering his early contribution to the quantum theory, it might have been supposed that he would have accepted readily the principle of indeterminacy, which came to play so large a part in it; and that, in his quest for a further unification of the laws of Nature, he would have tried to weld together the discontinuous and indeterminate picture given by the quantum theory with the continuous and determinate picture of relativity. But for Einstein physics was firmly rooted in causality; God did not play at dice, and he would not admit the ultimate validity of any theory based on chance or indeterminacy. The quantum theory remained, therefore, for him as a passing phase, however important to working physicists.

Kuiper Belt Objects (KBOs)

“The interesting thing for me is the suggestion of the kinds of very interesting objects that may yet await discovery in the outer solar system. We are still scratching the edges of that region of the solar system, and I expect many surprises await us with the future deeper surveys.” - Mark Sykes, Direktur Planetary Science Institute (PSI) di Arizona.

Planet X Tidaklah Menakutkan

takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-68140845599378950872008-08-02T00:03:00.000-07:002009-08-02T00:07:23.242-07:00Surveillance Technologies and the Future of PrivacySurveillance Technologies and the Future of Privacy
Penulis : Mark Monmonier
Paperback : 250 halaman
Penerbit : University of Chicago Press, 2002
Bahasa : English
ISBN : 0226534278
Ukuran: 8,3 x 5,5 x 0,7 inci

takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4115306274558645194.post-43822440392758370682008-08-01T23:38:00.000-07:002009-08-01T23:39:54.805-07:00Pengertian Geografi

Topik terkait: atmosfer - kepulauan - benua - gurun - pulau - bentuk muka bumi -- samudera - laut - sungai - danau - ekologi - iklim - tanah - geomorfologi - biogeografi - garis waktu geografi, paleontologi dan paleogeografi

Geografi manusia

Geografi manusia-lingkungan

takbirhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05001925793461939467noreply@blogger.com0
